Deputy General Secretary
European industrial and medical gases sector
Background
EIGA (European Industrial Gases Association AISBL), based in Brussels, is a safety, technically oriented, and regulatory organisation representing most European companies producing and / or distributing industrial, medical and food grade gases.
The work of EIGA is conducted through the Board of Directors, four Councils, dozens of Working Groups and ad hoc groups which involve close to 400 experts from the member companies. EIGA hosts hundreds of working group meetings each year. These meetings are a mix of virtual and face to face meetings.
With the retirement of the current Deputy General Secretary, EIGA is looking for a replacement. A handover period is foreseen to facilitate a smooth transition.
Position Description
As Deputy General Secretary you will
- co-lead the technical agenda at EIGA
- strive for the highest standards of safety, innovation, and compliance
- present the industry position at regional and international forums such as the European Commission, United Nations Dangerous Goods Transport Committees, the European Medicines Agency and the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO & CEN)
Job Responsibilities
Communication
- Active promotion of the external image and reputation of EIGA.
- Maintain effective relations with institutions such as the European Commission and its Directorates, CEN, UN, ISO, other trade associations closely allied to the industrial gas industry.
- Ensure that the Industrial Gases Industry position on key legislative or regulatory issues is effectively stated and presented to the relevant authorities.
- Maintain effective relationships with the national gas associations in Europe and with other regional gas associations.
Coordination
- Track, analyse and influence European and international legislation and standardisation.
- Participate in external and internal technical working groups.
- Co-ordinate and participate in the global harmonisation efforts in the “International Harmonisation Council” (with the colleagues in other continents, i.e. EIGA, AIGA, CGA, MEGA and JIMGA).
- Assist in ensuring effective organisation and presentation of seminars and meetings.
Leadership
- Assist the EIGA General Secretary in the effective management of work and resources of the EIGA office, in the implementation of effective systems and in the organisation of EIGA events.
- Support the elaboration or review of EIGA publications.
- Review EIGA publications to ensure compliance to regulations and editorial correctness.
- Prepare EIGA’s position and presenting these to the competent authorities and standardisation bodies.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in a senior technical or management position in the gas industry.
- Good understanding of industrial gas technologies.
- Exposure to an international environment, understanding of the European legislative structure.
- Ability to travel widely and worldwide (up to half time) and work unsupervised.
- Capable of quickly developing good working relationships with all EIGA related disciplines and at all levels in member companies, legislative authorities, standardisation bodies and other associations (“collaborative and consensus building”).
- Ability to act impartially and provide objective guidance (e.g. to working groups) within the gas industry environment.
- Ability to achieve results by influencing others over whom he/she has no managerial authority (“diplomacy” and “results oriented”).
- Verbal and social ability, well developed communications skills.
- Fluency in English (written and oral), knowledge of other European languages is an asset.
- Good administrative and planning ability, computer literate.
