EIGA and their members are active in standardisation

1. CEN/CENELEC/Sector Forum Energy Management/Working Group Hydrogen (SFEM/WG Hydrogen) organised a hydrogen workshop.

In the light of the EC ambition towards a climate-neutral economy and uptake of hydrogen in the European market, the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance has published the roadmap on hydrogen standardization. By organizing workshops to identify hydrogen standardization gaps, challenges and needs, SFEM/WG Hydrogen and its members have played an important role in drafting the roadmap. However, there are more topics to tackle.

The main topics split between two groups were:

  • identifying standardization needs related to the Hydrogen carriers (ammonia, methanol and even MDE were covered)
  • mapping the needs of new standards for liquid hydrogen across the supply chain.

As result an H2 Coordination WG will be created, which have as basis the 5 main CEN objectives of the EU Commission: H2 Quality; Safety Standards; Ens use and Decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors; Mobility; Shipping/Maritime.

2. ISO TC 121 Anaesthetic and Respiratory Equipment, more particularly the SC 6 on Medical Gas Supply Systems met during an entire week in different working groups.

For our industry the current important subject is the review of the standard EN ISO 7396-1 on Medical Gas Pipeline Systems and sources of supply to hospitals. Our industry has to defend its interests , similar to the industry of Pressure Swing Adsorption machines for on-site production of medical oxygen. EIGAs WG7 Medical Gases, WG15 Medical equipment and our AHG-M.08 ISO mirror group have submitted several comments to shape this new standard revision.

3. ISO TC 197 Hydrogen Technologies committee with its many working groups also met for an entire week to report the progress of the development of the many standards on hydrogen mobility, sustainability and the new WG33 on Electrolysers.

The interest of so many different industries from all over the world provides this committee a high profile with many stakes involved. Members of EIGA’s WG11 H2 Energy and WG14 H2 Production are active in this committee.

4. EIGA WG2 Cylinders hosted the European Cylinders Makers Industry (ECMA) members.

This is a yearly 3-day event where both industries share standardisation, matters of concerns and activities and endeavour to find common approaches towards a safer gases industry.

5. The EIGA WG1 Transport met at EIGA offices and prepared our industry positions and comments on the multitude of papers under review for the UN Model Regulations on the transport of dangerous goods.

On this aspect, EIGA is also liaising with ECMA, CGA (our American Gas Association colleagues) and CEFIC the European Chemical Industry Council. Nearly 150 international Department of Transport Delegates together with approx. 20 organisations meet during a week in the UN buildings in Geneva to debate and sometimes to vote on new regulations to further assure safety in this transport sector …needless to say that transport rules for hydrogen electric battery vehicles, fuel cell vehicles and liquid hydrogen fuel vehicles are being defined.

All the above is happening within only 2 weeks split over 4 countries…adding to the challenge of EIGA staff attending all these meetings in support to their experts.
